Who needs to do an engagement session, and who doesn’t?

If you’re getting married this year one of the things you may be asking yourself is whether or not you need to do an engagement session (E session) with your wedding photographer. I think most future brides should do an engagement session with their wedding photographer before the big day, but not everybody really needs to! Today I’m going to write about who should do an E session with their wedding photographer and who is probably alright to just skip it. These days it’s customary to do an engagement photoshoot with your wedding photographer prior to the wedding. There are a lot of good reasons for this.

The first reason you should consider doing an engagement session with your wedding photographer is so you can get to know your photographer better and become more comfortable in front of the camera! If your wedding day comes and you haven’t really gotten to know your photographer you may feel a little awkward in front of the camera. Doing an engagement session is the perfect way to not only find out more about each other, but get comfortable in front of the camera. Your wedding photographer will show you tips and tricks on how to feel comfortable in front of the lens, show you posing tips, and put you more at ease. You’ll be spending a good portion of the best day of your life with your photographer nearby, so it’s important to spend a little time together before the wedding. An E session is the perfect way to establish a great relationship with your wedding photographer prior to the big day!

The next reason you should consider doing an engagement session with your wedding photographer is to verify that you love their shooting/editing style. You’ve probably been poring over every local wedding photographer’s website for weeks or even months trying to choose the right photographer to capture the biggest day of your life. By now you’ve seen that shooting and editing styles can vary greatly among photographers! Some photographers are light and airy while others are dark and moody. Once you’ve decided which style suits you best you’re probably ready to pick a photographer! An engagement session is a worthwhile investment even if you love all the work on your photographers website. You need to work with this photographer personally to verify that you love how your photos are going to look shot and edited in their style. Sometimes brides will think they love a dark and moody look when searching through photography portfolios, but then once they see their own photos edited in that style they realize “light and bright” might be the better fit (and the opposite can also be true).

Sometimes things we see on websites look beautiful but then once our own photos are delivered we realize we may want something entirely different. Engagement photography is a great investment. You do not want to wait until you receive your full wedding gallery to realize your photos are way too dark (or way too bright) for your taste. Remember, these photos are going to be the memories you have of your wedding for the rest of your life. What’s in style today will likely not be what’s in style 5 to 10 years from now. Editing styles that are going to “date” your photos may not be the best choice. I recommend you do an E session and get your photos back before you sign a wedding contract. My brides sign their wedding contract at the engagement session photo reveal. This way I know they love the photos I created for them! So what happens if you get your engagement session photos back and you don’t love them? Well, you’re going to need to find another photographer and yes, I recommend doing another engagement session. Money lost on any engagement session will seem like nothing compared to being disappointed with your entire wedding gallery!

I mentioned that there are some brides who may not need to do an engagement session. Who are these brides? If you’ve already been working with a professional photographer for many years, you may not need an engagement session. If you have a photographer you love, he/she has been shooting your family photos for the last decade, you know and trust this photographer fully, and there’s no one else you’d rather have shoot your wedding, then I’d say you’re safe to forgo the engagement session. However, you might still want to do the session anyways just because it’s awesome to have professional quality photos for your Save the Dates!

In conclusion I think you should do an engagement session with your wedding photographer prior to the big day! In the end you may end up doing more than one engagement session, but I promise you it will be worth the investment when you see your wedding photos delivered!

Do you even need a professional wedding photographer in 2020?

Brides of 2020, I’m a professional wedding photographer, and I totally get you! Ten to fifteen years go when asked what items they would grab first in the event of a house fire, most people would choose to save printed photos. That’s not the case anymore. Once upon a time we kept cherished printed photos of loved ones in shoeboxes and albums under the bed or in the closet. Now everything is digital and saved to the cloud. Even those old cherished photos of Grandma in her wedding dress have since been scanned and saved, along with tens of thousands of other digital photographs. If physical prints and albums don’t hold as much value as they once did, do you even need to hire a professional wedding photographer? The new iPhone takes fantastic photos, and the price of “fancy” DSLR cameras has dropped, allowing many new aspiring photographers, who are not yet professionals, to enter the “wedding world” with lower pricing.

Back when our grandparents (and for some of us our parents) got married, the ONLY choice was to hire a professional photographer to document the day. Otherwise there would be no photographic evidence that the event even took place. That not the case for those tying the knot in 2020! You’ve got options, and I’m here to help you make the decision that’s right for YOU! Although I’m a Fort Hood and Killeen area professional wedding photographer (and I would LOVE to capture your wedding day for you), I also understand that times are changing and there are a TON of options! I’ll go over the most popular choices you may be considering and let you know what I think!

First, let’s talk about smartphones! The new iPhone and latest Samsung phones take outstanding photos. So, why not have family and friends snap away on their phones and send you all the pictures? This might seem like a good option for a number of reasons. It saves money on hiring an expensive professional, most modern phones are capable of producing a quality picture, awesome editing apps are available, and digital photos are really what matter most to us. As good as phone pictures are (and they are GOOD) I still recommend a professional photographer for your wedding.

Here’s why:

Reason #1- The shot list.

As a professional photographer I’m going to sit down with you ahead of your wedding and we are going to discuss every shot you may want to have taken at your wedding. Sure, you can find generic wedding shot lists online and try to keep up with what’s been captured throughout the day. You can even assign certain shots to each bridesmaid. This might actually seem like a viable option, except there’s still too much room for heartache and regret. Remember, after your wedding day is over it can’t be redone. If nobody remembers to snap that photo of grandma’s face when she sees you in your dress, you’ll just never have it. This goes for photos of grandma or anything else that might be important to you. Being a professional wedding photographer goes beyond just snapping pictures. It’s also about making sure you have everything captured the way you want it captured.

Affinity Fotografie Austin Wedding PhotographerWhen your wedding guests get caught up having fun, or it’s later on in the day and cell phone batteries begin to die, someone may forget (or be unable to take) that shot you had your heart set on. That moment will pass and you won’t have it captured. I collaborate with each and every one of my brides to create a custom, personalized shot list. It’s literally my job and my honor to be with you every step of the way and ensure every important moment is accounted for! Let your guests have fun, live in the moment, and not worry about a thing. Let me worry about getting it all on camera! It’s my dedicated role at your wedding. When I’m photographing your wedding I’m a working professional. I’m not focusing on anything else other than capturing your day! I’m in the right place at the right time with my camera in hand, all day long. You’ll have so many things to remember and think about on your wedding day, but photography won’t be one of them. I’m there so you can relax knowing every photo on YOUR shot list is taken care of!

Reason #2 Professional quality

Like I’ve said, the picture quality using our modern smartphones has come a long way… but… its still not a match for higher end camera gear used by true professionals with years of experience and skill. One major difference in quality comes in the form of lighting and light modifiers. I use multiple off camera lights as well as light modifiers when I photograph a wedding. This is something that requires a specific set of specialized equipment and education on the part of the photographer. The use of professional lighting equipment at your wedding will make a world of difference in the quality of your photos. Smartphones have better low light capabilities now, but that feature is still nowhere near a match for professional lighting.

Reason #3 Organization

Would you ever really organize hundreds of smartphone shots? Let’s say you’ve still decided to go the route of having family and friends capture your day via smartphones. The images start coming in through texts and airdrops.

So.

Many.

Texts.

As you look through them and start saving them on your phone’s camera roll you’ll see some that you like, some that are just ok, and many others. Be honest- will you ever organize them, move them to another device, or ensure they’re saved to the cloud in case your phone falls into a lake? Will ever do anything with them other than post your few favorites on social media? What will happen months or years down the road when your wedding memories are all but gone due to a lost phone? Or maybe you upgrade and forget to transfer your photos over. Anything can happen! With a professional wedding photographer it’s different. With my services you’ll receive a gallery that is downloadable, a USB drive, and multiple options for beautiful print and photo products. While I highly recommend printing, I understand the needs and wants of the modern bride. I certainly offer prints and products, but I don’t require it. The option is there for you if you want it! The albums we create are breathtaking and the quality they are assembled with will last well over 100 years. If nothing else, the photos I capture will be delivered to you in 2 ways allowing you multiple options for saving and storing, they will be high resolution, and delivered to you fully retouched with the professional standard in editing software. Not to mention your day will be captured they way you saw it happen. Your gallery will be a complete representation of your wedding day!

I know it can be tempting to cut costs when it comes to your wedding. After all, your wedding is likely to be one of the largest expenditures of your life, after a house, education, and cars. You should definitely make sure you really think it through if you are considering cutting out a professional wedding photographer. I know that if you decide to book Affinity Fotografie Weddings (or any other pro for that matter) you won’t regret it! Your wedding memories will be beautifully preserved forever!
